How to configure a proxy in Windows 10 step by step?
One of the main problems we need to deal with and maintain is the security and confidentiality of information both personally and that of the users who make up the organization and to whom we provide support and management. all levels and conceptions that are established in the organization to preserve these pillars.
Although there are many options that we can implement and use for optimal information security, there is one in particular that we can implement in Windows 10 systems and it is the use of a proxy server that guarantees confidentiality during navigation.
One of the aspects that generates the most security and confidentiality issues anywhere and regardless of the environment, house or business, is the way we navigate the network, because we know that our data can be stolen or that attackers can use open ports to access the system and from there perform incorrect operations.
We will learn what a proxy server is, how to implement it in Windows 10 and how it will take care of the issue of improving the security and confidentiality of each user in the network structure.
What a proxy server A proxy server is essentially an intermediary between client computers and the Internet. With this operation, when we browse the websites, they will see the IP address of the proxy server but not that of the computer that requested navigation, increasing security on the client computer because it will not be detected by the site Web.
There are two types of proxy servers
- HTTP proxy server: This is the most used since it is implemented for the entire web navigation process with HTTP and HTTPS protocols
- SOCKS proxy server: It is more advanced and can be implemented for various protocols such as FTP, SMTP, among others.
Characteristics of a proxy server
Among the main features we find when using a proxy server, we have:
- Authentication: Thanks to this, we can implement authentication systems such as users and passwords in order to have a more organized administrative control.
- Filtered: By implementing a proxy server, we can create defined rules to prevent access to certain websites
- Caching of sites: Thanks to this option, we can access the websites visited in a much more agile way, this can be found as a proxy cache.
1. Configure the proxy server in Windows 10
Then we will see how to configure a proxy server in Windows 10 with the identification information that has been provided to us in our organization since we will do this approach for external connections, without obviously affecting internal connections. This process covers compatibility with all browsers we have in the operating system such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
To start the process of configuration of the proxy server in Windows 10, we go to the Start menu and select the Adjust tab, we will see the next window. We select the Network and Internet option and in the window that appears click on the Proxy option
We can see that by default Windows has the active option Automatically detect parameters using the Web proxy or WPAD (Web Proxy Autodiscovery Protocol) protocol to automatically connect if it detects the respective identification information.
In the event that we have identification information provided by a proxy service provider or by the site on which we are going to connect, we must deactivate this option by clicking on the switch and defining its status on Disabled. In addition, we will activate the Use configuration script option and on the Script Address line enter the path where the connection script is hosted. Once we have entered the provided script, click the save option to apply the changes.
2. Manual configuration of the proxy server
To use this option, it is necessary that we have the address where the link to the proxy server is located and the port that will be required for your connection, this information must be provided by the respective organization or supplier.
To enter these values in Windows 10, we activate the option Use the proxy server located on the ground Manual configuration of the proxy and we will enter the road and the port which has been supplied. With this, Windows will send all network traffic via the proxy.
To establish exceptions in this process, i.e. to connect directly to the website, we can enter these addresses in the Use proxy server field except for addresses starting with the following entries. Using the * .local option, we indicate that everything that ends in .local is omitted from the proxy server and we can connect directly.
It is possible to check the box Do not use a proxy server for local addresses (intranet) and thus avoid all traffic linked to local links being directed by the proxy server.
3. Configuration of a proxy server under Windows 7
As an additional point, we will show how to configure a proxy server in Windows 7 because many users still use this large operating system.
To do this, we go to the configuration panel and select the Red e Internet option (Network and Internet)
There we select the Internet options line and in the displayed window we go to the Connections tab
As in Windows 10, the detection of proxy servers is automatic in Windows 7 and it will be necessary to enter the respective script provided by the supplier or by the organization.
To enter it, click on the Use automatic configuration script box and in the Address field we will enter the respective script :
To manually define the address of the proxy server and its connecting port, we activate the Use a proxy server box for your local network and we enter the respective data that has been provided.
The Contour the proxy server box for the local address it omits local addresses in the proxy server as we saw in Windows 10. If we rely on the Advanced – Advanced option We can define the addresses that will be omitted by the proxy server and also configure the proxy server for other additional protocols such as FTP or HTTPS:
Click OK to save the changes. We can see how simple and completely safe the configuration process for the proxy server is.
3. Use of free proxy servers
This approach is more aimed at home users who wish to have anonymous and secure navigation. The use is quite simple since it will be enough to go to the address of the link and write the site to visit there and in this way we will access said site anonymously.
Some free proxy servers we can use are:
In this way, we have different options for navigating anonymously and increasing the security of our data and therefore our privacy on the Internet, because it is a fundamental issue for all users.
